About

Yale offers Modern Turkish courses at the Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, providing students with a comprehensive path to language proficiency. The four-course sequence of Elementary and Intermediate (L1–L4) is designed to build a strong foundation in the four core skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through this sequence, students progressively develop their ability to understand and produce Modern Turkish in both spoken and written forms, moving from basic communication to more sustained and nuanced use of the language. The curriculum emphasizes an integrated approach, ensuring that grammar, vocabulary, and cultural knowledge develop in tandem across all four levels.

Students who complete the Elementary and Intermediate sequence have the option of continuing to Advanced courses (L5), which are designed to help them refine and deepen their language abilities. At this level, the goal is for students to develop the skills necessary to speak adequately in a range of social situations, as well as to read and write non-specialized material without frequent resort to dictionaries or grammar books. Advanced coursework helps students engage more independently and confidently with Turkish-language texts and conversations, preparing them for academic, professional, or personal use of the language beyond the classroom.
